Habitat Norway is a Norwegian non governmental organisation with the overall aim to promote the interest and awareness of settlement issues around the world. The organisation was established in order to put settlement issues on the Norwegian Development Policy Agenda. Habitat Norway is a member of the Habitat International Coalition.
The organisation was founded in 1988 as a result of the activities carried out during the International Year of Shelter for the Homeless. The organisation is attached to the Norwegian Branch of International Federation of Housing and Planning, and is open to all professionals; it has members representing many different disciplines such as architecture, engineering, sociology, human geography, and social anthropology. The activities consist mainly of lectures and seminars, sometimes in cooperation with other organisations. Habitat Norway arranges a seminar in October each year in celebration of the World Habitat Day.

FNs internasjonale dag for by- og bosettingsspørsmål fokuserer i år på temaet Cities, Magnets of Hope. Aldri har tilflyttingen til byene i Sør vært så stor, og halvparten av verdens befolkning bor nå i byer. I 2050 kan dette ha vokst til 2/3 eller 60 milliarder mennesker. Det er viktig at fagfolk, studenter og politikere får øynene opp for byenes muligheter som katalysatorer for utvikling. Vi trenger bærekraftige løsninger på kritiske problemer. Hvordan møte disse utfordringene? Hvordan kan vi bidra til bedre urbane samfunn og miljøer?
Hvordan vi løser disse oppgavene er en av menneskehetens største oppgaver fremover.
Konferansen vil bli åpnet av Bistandsminister Erik Solheim som trekker linjene fra tusenårsmålene til norsk bistandspolitikk. UDs prosjektkoordinator for migrasjon og utvikling, Manuela Ramin-Osmundsen vil innlede til debatt om ”Migration and Development – is it possible?”. Hun kommer rett fra FN-toppmøtet i New York hvor nettopp dette var temaet. Professor, Dr. Sandy Halliday kommer fra UK og vil gi oss visjoner for økologiske byer, mens andre vil presentere sine erfaringer med å muligjøre tiltak som ofte kan synes umulige; fra Metropolitan plan for Ramallah til byutvikling i Cape Town, Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, Bogota og Quito. Konferansen avsluttes med en paneldebatt.
I AHO´s utstillingslokale Gallerietvil de norske bidragene til World Urban Forum som fant sted i Vancouver i juni bli utstilt denne dagen; mange interessante studentarbeider vil bli vist. Andre deltagere, institusjoner, NGOer mm. inviteres herved til å bidra til utstillingen og eller med informasjon om egen virksomhet innenfor konferansens tema. Magnetism of Cities: Myths and Potentials
The world is witnessing the greatest urban migration in history. But what are the visions for future urban settlements?
The World Habitat Day reflects on the state of human settlements and the basic right to adequate shelter for all. Half of the world´s population live in cities, and by 2050 this may rise to two-thirds, or 6 billion people. It is essential to altert professionals, students and policy-makers on the power of cities as catalysts for development. We need long term sustainable solutions to the critical problems our living patterns generate.
What may be adequate responses to migration into cities, and how do we create better urban communities, economies and ecology? How we manage these questions is arguably one of the greatest challenges facing humanity.
